It can be difficult to choose a favorite liquor store. Some have great wine selections, others offer beers from around the globe. A few have staff who can choose something you’ve never heard of that becomes a new favorite, just based on a description of your breakfast preferences. Still others offer that one special gin or scotch that you adore.
But when you find all of that in one place, well, then you know you’ve found the best. And according to our readers, you’ll get that, and more, with Wine World Beer & Spirits in Abingdon. |
“Our selection always includes hard to find items… that goes for our beers as well – we’ve probably got one of the largest microbrew selections around.”

Our readers were clear that Wine World is their favorite, for a variety of reasons. As Joseph Hess II of Abingdon tells us, “Wine World is just the best for its huge selection, knowledgeable staff, taste testings that compare to none and the friendliest people in town that call you a friend and not just a customer. They have a wonderful web site, e-mail newsletter and will talk to you about anything when you stop in to buy or just say hi.” Sara Cook of Bel Air, agrees. “They have a huge selection and really great prices. They always have whatever I’m looking for.”

Elizabeth Labruto, the owner of Wine World, is delighted that her customers are happy. “We give the best service we can, the best selection and the best value. We listen to what our customers want and try to meet their needs. We want to be a friendly place to shop with a knowledgeable staff. We listen to our employees and we listen to our customers.”
The selection at Wine World is truly amazing. They carry about 5000 different products, including over 3000 wines from around the world. Wine tastings are held every Friday and Saturday, and there’s even a beer tasting on Thursday, plus additional events “any time there’s anything special that we get,” says Labruto. The house can get packed for tastings, and they’re a great way to explore new varieties and meet fellow enthusiasts.
While Wine World does carry the standard types of wine, beer and liquors, it’s their enthusiasm for finding the unusual that creates such passion in their customers. According to Labruto, that enthusiasm is an essential part of Wine World’s mission.
“Our selection always includes hard-to-find items,” she explains. “People will go to restaurants and come in and say ‘oh I haven’t seen this anywhere and I love it.’ That goes for our beers as well – we’ve probably got one of the largest microbrew selections around. We know what’s good and we bring it in.” |
And they don’t stop at beer and wine, either. Among the more exotic options are: Peanut liqueur from St. Lucia – a cream base like Bailey’s but it’s just peanut flavored. Marula fruit crème – called Amarula – from Africa that elephants eat. In the wine department you’ll find Sauternes and Tokaji for dessert wines, amazing ports, and high end champagnes. For liquers, consider 150 and 100 Grand Marnier. And there’s an outstanding gin selection, including craft gins like Junipero. Whatever you want, if you can sell it in Maryland, chances are Wine World has it!
